Shadow Assistant Minister for Regional Health and Member for Mallee Anne Webster urges Australians to register to be an organ and tissue donor.
July 23-30 is DonateLife Week, which highlights the importance of organ and tissue donation.
“Organ donation is a cause close to my heart as someone whose family has been touched by the gift of organ donation and as co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Organ Donation with my friend and colleague Dr Mike Freelander MP,” Dr Webster said.
“In Australia there are 9 million people who say they support organ and tissue donation but haven’t yet signed up – encouraging those people to register is what DonateLife Week is all about.”
Organ donation laws in Australia require a deceased person’s family to consent before a donation can proceed.
“Family members are much more likely to agree if they know you’re registered and want to be a donor,” Dr Webster said.
Signing up to be an organ donor takes just one minute.
Head to https://www.donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today or jump into the Medicare app to register in just 3 taps.
“It is that easy, and that one minute of your time could give another person and their family a whole lifetime,” Dr Webster said.
