Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster MP joined community advocates and Hindmarsh Shire councillors in Rainbow on Tuesday to announce a $1 million in accessibility upgrades to public amenities at the historic 'The Mecca' public hall should the Coalition form government at the upcoming election.
The funding will cover most of the estimated $1.15 million project, ensuring the facilities meet Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards.
"Today I could confirm, visiting the site, about the severe accessibility issues for people with a disability, as Rainbow citizen of the year and Committed for Rainbow spokesperson Allira Roberts demonstrated today," Dr Webster said.
"Accessing the female toilets can also be unnerving, particularly at night, due to the passageway and the fact that there is a blind corner prior to entering the toilets.
"While the passage will remain in the proposed design it will be opened up and will allow a lot more natural light during the day and improved lighting will be installed for night use."
The upgrade will replace outdated facilities with modern, inclusive amenities designed to improve accessibility and safety for all users.
The project will add a new DDA-compliant all-abilities facility in the former council customer service building with direct access from Federal Street, refurbish male and female public amenities to improve accessibility and safety and construct a compliant access ramp leading to the Mecca supper and meeting rooms.
Hindmarsh Shire Council mayor Ron Ismay said: "The current toilets are an embarrassment to the community and shire. An upgrade is desperately needed."
Rainbow Town Committee spokesperson Allira Roberts said: "[The] new disability toilets will make it easier for more people to volunteer for community groups that use the Mecca."
