Politicians from every side of the Chamber and corner of Australia were treated to the best the Murray Darling Basin has to offer on Wednesday night at the Taste Of The Basin event in Parliament House.
Hundreds of politicians, staffers and journalists came through the showcase, hosted by Members representing communities from up and down the basin, featuring the produce put at risk by Federal Labor Water Minister Tanya Plibersek’s Bill to amend the Water Act and revise the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
“Thankyou to the Sunraysia and Swan Hill producers who made the journey to Canberra to show Labor what they are willing to compromise,” Dr Webster said.
“The Murray Darling Basin produces 40 per cent of Australia’s food and fibre, but Labor has little regard for these producers in favour of open slather buybacks to meet their 450GL for the environment target.”
Minister Plibersek was spotted browsing the produce during the evening, along with Leader Of The Opposition Peter Dutton and Leader of The Nationals David Littleproud – a co-host.
“The smorgasbord should have been food for thought for Minister Plibersek, we must not kill our river communities,” Dr Webster said.
“If the Bill passes the Senate unamended there will be open slather buybacks for up to 750GL – equivalent to one and a half Sydney Harbours.”
Sunraysia and Swan Hill producers represented at the Showcase were: Fossey’s Distillery, Sunbeam Foods, Belvedere Fruit Growers, Cutri Fruit, Australian Almonds and Andrew Peace Wines.
Dr Webster was unable to make the event due to being in COVID isolation.
