OzFish will receive grant funding under the new Healthy Rivers – Healthy Communities program to improve the health of local waterways and build stronger regional communities.

Minister for Resources and Water, Keith Pitt and Nationals Member for Mallee, Dr Anne Webster today announced the project in Mallee would receive funding of $643,000 under the new program.

Minister Pitt said the government is focused on worthwhile projects that deliver real benefits to communities.

“The new $97 million Healthy Rivers – Healthy Communities program is a cornerstone of our Government’s commitment to the millions who live in the Murray–Darling Basin and rely on its water resources for their wellbeing and jobs,” Minister Pitt said.

“The program brings together community groups, the irrigation industry, Basin stakeholders and state governments into one program to make real, lasting impacts that build stronger, more vibrant regional economies and communities, improve the health of rivers and wetlands, while enhancing environmental outcomes through targeted infrastructure investment.

“This program is designed to pick up on the good work the fully expended $20 million Healthy Rivers program is making through direct, on-ground investments – sowing 445kg of native seed, removing 35 tonnes of waste, and installing 162 new instream fish habitats across the Basin.

“This grant deserves to be funded because it is a great example of what we can achieve when we put community aspirations and expertise at the heart of Basin Plan implementation.”

Nationals Member for Mallee, Dr Anne Webster said the grant of $643,000 awarded to OzFish would support significant restoration works for the whole reach of the lower Murray River catchment between lock seven and lock 11, an area that covers over 900 kilometres.

“The project will install up to 30 rocky large habitat structures, 40 woody habitats and five modernised fish screens following consultation with local recreational anglers, associated land managers and authorities and also deliver four educational “fish focus” forums in major towns within the project area to inspire the local community to participate,” Dr Webster said.

The Healthy Rivers – Healthy Communities program is awarding eight grants valued at $5,224,104 now. The program will invite direct applications in the new financial year.

Only the Coalition has plan to deliver a strong economy and a stronger future for Mallee.
